Request Deferment or Excuse

The Court may grant deferment and excuse requests for potential jurors who qualify as outlined in the District of Oregon Jury Selection Plan

 and 28 U.S.C. § 1863(b)(5)(A). All requests for excuse and supporting documentation must be submitted in writing (e-mail, fax, or mail), and must include the nine-digit participant number.

Persons Eligible to Request Excuse

Required Supporting Documentation

Persons over 70 years old.

Confirmation of birth date.

Persons having responsibility for providing in-home care and custody or home-schooling of a child or children during normal business hours.

Explanation of the type of care provided, including the ages of those being cared for, the time periods during which care is provided, and who provides coverage when you are unavailable.

Persons who are essential to the care of aged or infirm.

(This excuse is not available to individuals employed at staffed care facilities or for healthcare professionals.)

Persons who have served as grand or petit jurors in a state, federal, territorial, or commonwealth court within the past two years.

Proof of prior service (jury payment, check stub, attendance letter, certificate of service, etc.). Proof of service can be requested from the court in which service was performed.

Persons who serve a public agency without compensation as volunteer safety personnel, such as volunteer firefighters, rescue squad members, or volunteer ambulance crew.

Name of employing public agency, job title and description, and typical schedule.

Persons with a medical condition or treatment plan that would keep them from serving.

Written statement from a licensed provider. Statements must include a current date, provider’s name and office information, an explanation of why it is medically advisable for the patient to refrain from jury service, and the provider’s signature and credentials (M.D., ANP-PB, LP, D.D.S., D.M.D., etc.). Statements can be faxed directly to the Jury Department.

Appropriate Reasons for Requesting Deferment

Prepaid travel arrangements or “snowbird” travel.

Prepaid travel: Copy of travel confirmation or itinerary.

Snowbird travel: Address of second residence and date of return to Oregon.

Full-time student status.

Enrollment verification or school schedule.

Undue financial or transportation hardship.

Financial: Description of the hardship. Note that trials typically last 1-5 days. Jurors are paid $50.00 per day and are reimbursed for round-trip mileage and parking.

Transportation: Description of the hardship and the types of local public transportation options (or lack thereof).

Scheduled medical appointments or procedures.

Date and location of scheduled appointment or procedure.

Temporary care of an aged/infirm family member.

Description of the type and estimated end date of primary care.

Other undue hardship or extreme inconvenience.

Description of the undue hardship or extreme inconvenience and estimated end date.

  2. Press 1,
  3. Enter the nine-digit participant number highlighted at the top of the Summons for Jury Service, and
  4. Press 1 to confirm the first three letters of your last name and access your recorded reporting instructions.
