Statement of the District of Oregon on the Countrywide Customer Data Security Breach Class Action Suit

The Court has received a number of queries from individuals who have received notices regarding a pending class action suit against Countrywide Mortgage Co. The notice correspondence has listed a return address of "Notice Administrator for U.S. District Court," with a Post Office box located in Portland, Oregon. This has led many individuals to assume that the litigation is pending in our District.

Notice to potential members of a class is the responsibility of the attorneys representing the class. To effect such notice by mail can be a huge task, particularly if the potential class of affected parties numbers in the thousands or tens of thousands. To handle such notices, attorneys frequently rely on contracted service providers. This is the case in the Countrywide litigation. The "Notice Administrator" is a third party service processor assisting the litigants in a particular class action suit against Countrywide in regards to a customer data security breach.

The case is being tried in the Western District of Kentucky. This Court is unable to provide specifics regarding the case or the proposed settlement. If you are concerned about the veracity of the notice you received, you are encouraged to contact the case manager for the class action in the Western District of Kentucky at 1-270-415-6405. The notice administrator, Epiq Systems, Inc., has also provided a number for notice recipients to call for more information: 1-866-940-3612.
